Madison Gains National Budget Award

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), the preeminent national municipal finance organization, has announced that the City of Madison received GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2024 budget.
When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. Madison's Finance Director Karen Stapp will formally be presented the award at the February 12, 2024, City Council meeting by a representative of the GFOA.
The GFOA award notification stated that, "The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting."
In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as:
  • a policy document.
  • a financial plan oft an operations guide
  • a communications device
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.
“On behalf of our finance team, I am honored to receive this recognition. Our City Manager John Klimm and the entire City Council have made fiscal transparency a high priority,” stated Finance Director Stapp. “We will continue to improve this document each year because our citizens have a right to know how their hard-earned tax dollars are spent”.
