Comprehensive Planning

Madison approaches comprehensive planning through a variety of means.  First, the city articulates its long term vision and collective expectations in planning documents, such as the Joint Comprehensive Plan, and outlines its requirements and regulations in accessible publications, such as the Code of Ordinances.  Second, the city forms cooperative working relationships with engineering professionals and code officials - for example, the Morgan County Building & Inspection Office.  Third, the city utilizes a number of civic boards which draw upon the volunteer time and expertise of its citizenry.  Collectively, these measures allow the City of Madison to develop a broad planning efforts which to manage growth while protecting the community's natural and historic assets.
